Vertical Tutoring
transforming schools: improving outcomes

Peter Barnard Consulting Ltd and the Association of VT Schools have a mission to support school improvement, enhance student outcomes and make schools more fun to work in. It is important that schools understand VT and implement best practice rather than copy the mistakes of other schools. We believe that schools are packed with great leaders, teachers and support staff and that parents and students have a key contribution to make to a school's success. We also believe that it is the Year System (Grade System in USA) that prevents schools and those who work so hard in schools, from realising their potential and being even more amazing than they are. Our intention is to invite people to look again at the management practices, targets and assumptions they have inherited and show how VT resolves and reduces so many (if not all) of the complex challenges schools face. Schools can then decide what best to do and how.

The course provider and trainer is Peter Barnard, recognised by schools as one of the national leaders in schools as organisations and especially the system of Vertical Tutoring. With his LT he pioneered and developed VT in its modern form 25 years ago and has been improving VT ever since. Peter has been Head of three schools and puts down his success to his systems understanding and experience of VT. His last school was Sharnbrook Upper School in Bedfordshire, now a mature VT school. Peter retired after 38 very successful years but his passion for schools and for those who work in them remains undiminished. He has spent the last five years developing and researching VT while training over 500 schools and liaising with 100s more internationally. He has written two controversial and challenging books on school management. These are 'Chaos, Culture and Third Millennium Schools' and more recently, 'Vertical Tutoring-notes on school management'. He is often spoken of by schools as the guru of school improvement and especially Vertical Tutoring. His messages are challenging and uncompromising and not for the faint-hearted. VT is now the fastest growing school organisational culture in the UK. Peter believes that most schools will be VT within four years. He also believes VT will kick start VTe (Vertical Teaching)

Schools that have gone VT without appropriate training or are planning to move to a VT culture, are warmly invited to contact this site for a systems check and any advice. It is easy to make mistakes and cherry-picking VT ideas rarely works. Similarly, if you are at a school currently engaged in VT where you feel the system is not working as you hoped, feel free to ask for free advice and support.
